Weekly Wins: Things to Do in Jax 7/11 – 7/17

Okay, we are all upset that the 4th of July madness is done. All we wanted was to wave our flags and revel in our American pride forever.

But the time to move on has come and, with it, NEW OPPORTUNITIES!

So for anyone looking to get past the post-holiday blues and find some fun social activities this post-holiday week, please read on. And share your own weekly wins with us by tagging #FrayLife in your social posts this week!

Wednesday, July 11

I know I touch on this Wednesday weekly activity all the time, but it is the bees knees. If you need a way to do some light drinking without feeling bad about it, go to Green Room Brewing for a light jog to burn those calories. Afterwards, mingle with your fit friends while you sip on some brews.

– If you’ve never seen the show 30 Rock, start watching for an epic round of 30 Rock Trivia at Lola’s Burrito and Burger Joint. From 7:30-9:30, you get the chance to show off and prove your knowledge…and eat burritos. Lola’s personally described it as fun and a little weird, like “going to the gym drunk”. So come on and let’s get weird.

Thursday, July 12

Technically Thursday nights at Mellow Mushroom are Ladies Nights, but that is actually what brings all the men. The women come for $1 glass of wine. The men come for the women. All in all, you get a fun and flirty social scene.

– Normally this talented singer is bringing the soul to New York City, but luckily, Frank Shiner is coming to Whiskey Jax to give us a show. His long-time friend Fran Pitre will be joining him, and she happens to be from Jacksonville! Come and support some local music for only $20!

Friday, July 13

Mauli Ola Foundation has a great mission of introducing surfing and ocean-based activities as natural therapies for treating genetic disorders. They will be coming to Surfer from 6-9 PM with a lot of well-known surfers to speak about this. On a lighter note, they also will have some live music…and Surfer has phenomenal drinks, so you can’t go wrong.

– It’s Friday the 13th, so why not indulge in some nerve-racking superstitious stuff at the zoo all night at Zooperstition? There will be food trucks, a bar, and live music, plus a chance to see the animals on exhibit until 8:30 pm. Maybe you just are missing Halloween, but don’t miss out on this. (Side note, tickets are pre-sale, only.)

Saturday, July 14

– These beachside festivals are THE BOMB. Head to SeaWalk Pavilion starting at noon for a chance to down some beers and dance with your friends at Beaches Freedom Festival. It’s completely free, unless you’re trying to ball out and go VIP. The biggest hit this year with be The Band Be Easy playing live! It is a great cause and benefits multiple veteran organizations.

– The Amazing Jax Beach Craft Beer Scavenger Hunt/Crawl is a half scavenger hunt/half bar crawl that starts at Surfer and leads you through a series of clues and mental challenges to test your craft beer knowledge. POGO Events Florida holds the event and highly encourages you to practice your pong shots and cup-flipping. They are plenty of drinking game challenges along the route.

Sunday, July 15

Want a classic, yet discounted, activity? Go bowling!!! From 8 PM to midnight on Sundays, you can bowl for only $13 and it includes the shoes! ‘Tis true that Beach Bowl is kind-of a sketchy, run-down bowling alley, but we all know that only adds to the fun.

At 2 PM this Sunday, hit the Florida Theatre for a classic movie, Tombstone. For only $7.50, you can gather up all your friends and go watch this old western movie about a group of brothers who get into some trouble. Hey, it might not sound enticing, but if you got nothing else to do, why not.

– From 8 to 10 PM, Friday Musicale is holding a special tribute to the one and only, Michael Jackson. Starring the best Michael Jackson impersonator, Danny Dash Andrews, this show is a mere $20 for an incredible concert experience that pays tribute to the legacy of The King of Pop.

Monday, July 16

– So maybe you’re just on the prowl for some free food or maybe you’re trying to network with chiropractors, but this is the EVENT to be at. At Bonefish Grill, you will get FREE YUMMY FOOD if you RSVP to the Thrive Chiropractic Health Center for this community dinner! They have a good mission to keep people healthy…and feed them well.

Tuesday, July 17

– As a way to coax people into talking about freedom and issues that bother them currently in society, Americans for Prosperity is hosting this movie night! They give you some free grub, good conversation topics to think about, and a great way to make friends. It all goes down at the Freedom House on Thacker Avenue.

Do you ever dream of writing a movie? Well, for a free night of knowledge, Creative Veins is encouraging you to follow that dream! They will be teaching screenwriting for film, TV, and the web from 7-9 PM. It only takes 60 seconds to register but you gain a lifetime of new knowledge.

That about sums up the going-ons of Jacksonville for this upcoming week. Always take advantage of all the cool stuff going on, or just, ya know, pretend like nothing is going on and binge watch Netflix. Your choice.
