If you’re heading outside for a date in the Jacksonville area, chances are it involves the Atlantic Ocean, either on the beach or on a boat. For those looking to mix it up, there are a surprising number of nature paths and hiking trails nearby that make for unique date ideas. New couples and long-term partners alike will find something new to appreciate about Northeastern Florida when they get out together for a romantic stroll through our varied, lush terrain.

The Waterfall Loop at Bulls Bay Preserve

This hidden gem on the Westside features one of the only waterfalls in Florida, this rare (if a bit modest) sight combined with an easily traversed, mile long loop trail, makes for a perfect low-impact date spot for a quick stroll. Located under ten miles from Downtown Jacksonville, this oasis is an accessible entry point for anyone looking to spend more time exploring the outdoors in the region, and is a perfect spot to bring dogs or children along for the ride. 8017 Old Plank Rd, Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

This 120 acre property features 7 different trails that wind through a variety of manmade ecosystems, meaning there’s always something new to discover on a trek through the Botanical Gardens. Highlights include the Aralia Trail, which meanders through a forested wetland, and the Lake Loop, which circles the man-made Lake Ray, home to a variety of aquatic creatures and birds. The Botanical Gardens offer more of a protected nature walk vibe than what you might expect from a hardcore hiking trail, another good low-impact option for hiking newcomers. $3; 8am to 7pm;1445 Millcoe Road, Jacksonville, FL; jacksonvillearboretum.org // @jacksonvillearboretum

Robert W. Loftin Nature Trails at The Sawmill Slough Preserve

A 382 acre natural preserve on the University of North Florida campus, the Sawmill Slough Preserve was established in 2006, and is home to such highlights as a massive 600 year old tree known as Big Cypress, a surprising number of blueberry bushes which attract all sorts of critters, and a sandhill habitat. Losco Regional Park

A mix of paved trails and dirt paths, the Losco Regional Park features a trio of color coded trails that can be connected into a full three mile loop. Timucuan Trail at Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve

The Timucan Ecological and Historic preserve lies northeast of Jacksonville on the Atlantic, home to wetlands, salt marshes, and the Timucan Trail, a relatively challenging hiking trail compared to most others in the area. A 3 mile loop found in the Theodore Roosevelt area of the Timucuan is made by connecting the Timucuan Trail to the Willie Brown and Spanish Pond trails, which features observation decks, historical sites, and interesting views of exposed oyster beds at low tide. More confident hikers will be pleasantly surprised by this rigorous, varied trail, a great excursion for adventurous couples. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday; 12713 Ft Caroline Rd, Jacksonville, FL
